Anime as a whole is one of the most popular types of content out there. The stories are written in a way that immediately draws you into the unique world crafted by a combination of writers, and animators. There are many anime’s that do this very well, but a true gem in the anime world is Assassination Classroom.

What is Assassination Classroom?

Assassination Classroom, the students are trying to assassinate the teacher.

Assassination Classroom is an anime that fits into two primary genres, shounen, and comedy. This anime follows a group of students at a prestigious junior high school. This is no ordinary school mind you, the students here are learning to become trained assassins. They also learn the basics such as reading, writing, and arithmetic.

The group of students we follow are part of E class, which is primarily for students that have failed in one way or another. These students are looked down upon and even separated from the rest of the campus. They are not expected to succeed, that is until they are introduced to their new teacher, Koro-sensei.

Koro-sensei is not your average teacher. He is a being that resembles an octopus with superpowers such as superhuman speed, super strength, and an extreme sweet tooth. When Koro-sensei is first introduced we learn that he partially destroyed the Moon, and is planning to destroy the Earth within a year. The future assassin’s in this classroom must study under Koro-sensei, learn his weaknesses, and figure out a way to kill him before the deadline, or else the entire planet will cease to exist.

How is Assassination Classroom?

This anime was truly an unexpected gem for me, and there are several reasons for this. Koro-sensei’s character is simply amazing. He has just the right amount of humor and charisma. I could not get enough of his character whenever he’s on-screen. This anime catches you off guard with the way it subverts your expectations. I expected this to be the typical shounen anime, where we see the students progress over the story and one day rise to kill Koro-sensei.

The progression elements are there, but the bond that develops between the students and their teacher is extremely heartfelt. I found myself not wanting Koro-sensei to die at all. He truly changes the student’s lives and makes you question whether or not he is a threat throughout the entire series.

If you enjoy watching anime with a ton of humor then Assassination Classroom is one you should check out. This anime is full of laughs that will keep you entertained. There are several filler episodes, but even these episodes still have small elements that help to progress the overall story and introduce you to new classmates so you never feel like your time is wasted.

If you enjoy anime such as One Punch Man, Dragon Ball, or My Hero Academia, then Assassination Classroom is one you should also enjoy.

How is the Animation?

The animation style is well done overall. The fight scenes are bright and colorful and are just as animated as Koro-sensei is as it jumps from a lighthearted tone to a more serious one. If you are someone that won’t watch an anime due to bad animation you do not need to worry when watching Assassination Classroom.

This anime does poke fun at some of the common anime tropes, but overall there is nothing on the animation side that I feel will limit your enjoyment of the series.

Final Thoughts and Feedback

Overall Assassination Classroom is a really good time, and I highly recommend it if you are looking for a new shounen anime to jump into. The only negative feedback I have is the anime is extremely short with only 3 seasons. I was both excited and disappointed that it ended so quickly. With the premise of this series, which I explained earlier in this blog post, the end game always feels right around the corner.
